Real Experience
Gilmore chaired the "Gilmore Commission" during its entire existence from 1999-2003. Gilmore was warning the Clinton and Bush White Houses of the threat from a 9/11-style attack long before it actually happened. In the aftermath of 9/11, 146 of the Commission's 164 recommendations on Homeland Security were adopted and became the foundation of America's first line of defense. As Governor of Virginia, Gilmore guided the state through the fallout of the 9/11 attacks on the state.
Securing Our Borders
"The focus of the nation on Homeland Security began on September 11, 2001. Now it is 2006. Much progress has been made in airline and maritime security, although border protection remains ahead, and yet to be done." Govenor Gilmore recognizes that the next step in Homeland Security is to secure our borders.
Preserving Our Liberties
"Republicans have always held close to their hearts the principle of individual liberty. We cherish the right to determine our own destiny rather than have government determine it for us."Governor Gilmore knows that securing our Homeland does not mean creating a bloated and intrusive Federal Government.
